COACHING CAREER

Named the sixth third base coach in Rays history on Oct 24, 2017, following Greg Riddoch (1998-99), Billy Hatcher (2000-01), Terry Collins (2001), Tom Foley (2002-14) and Charlie Montoyo (2015-17)…will also work with catchers and help relay information and scouting reports to all players ... Rejoined the Rays following a four-year stint (2014-17) as the assistant hitting coach on Terry Francona's staff with the Indians…over his time there, the Indians ranked 5th in the majors with 4.55 runs per game, 2nd with 1,518 2B, 2nd with 2,734 BB and 5th with a .327 OBP ... Spent four years (2010-13) as the Rays minor league hitting coordinator before joining the major league staff with the Indians…became the first Rays minor league player to join the organization's coaching staff in 2004, when he began the year as a minor league catching instructor and finished as the hitting coach for Short-A Hudson Valley…managed four seasons, making stops at Hudson Valley (2006-07), Class-A Columbus (2008) and Class-A Bowling Green (2009) ... In addition to coaching third base as a minor league manager, he coached third for two winters in Caracas, Venezuela (2008-09, 2009-10).

PLAYING CAREER

Played parts of seven seasons in the minors, all with the Rays organization, from 1996-2002… was primarily a catcher, and also saw time at first base and corner outfield…topped out at Triple-A Durham in 2002…went to minor league camp with the Yankees in 2003 before ending his career…retired with a career .286 avg. in the minors ... Became the first player in the organization's history to hit for the cycle, on July 6, 1997 for Class-A Charleston, vs. Hickory (White Sox) ... Selected by the Rays in the eighth round of the 1996 June Draft, one of 97 players selected in the club's first-ever amateur draft…others drafted by the Rays that year include Mickey Callaway (seventh round), Kyle Snyder (27th, did not sign), Dan Wheeler (34th) and Travis Phelps (89th).

PERSONAL

He and his wife, Chris, reside in Albany, N.Y. with their two sons, George (2) and infant Leo ... Graduated from Old Dominion University with a history degree…named the 1996 ODU Male Athlete of the Year and Male Scholar Athlete of the Year…inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 ... Enshrined into the Bethlehem Central (N.Y.) Hall of Fame in 2015, along with then-FOX anchor Megyn Kelly, who graduated four years ahead of him.
