Jacob Daniel Faria Bio Info

Jake proposed to his fiancée, Jessica, at Duke Gardens in Durham, N.C., on their six-year anniversary of dating last summer…the two are planning a Nov 16 wedding in California... While playing scout ball in 2010, Jake was turned away by an overbooked hotel…to apologize, the hotel provided a gift bag with treats and a rubber duck…the duck found its way to Jake's equipment bag, where it was forgotten…after a strong first season as a professional, he was frustrated by a poor 2012 campaign…the next spring began poorly as well, until Jake realized a new equipment bag had separated him from the duck…when his father shipped Jake's car, he placed the duck inside…an outstanding 2013 campaign followed and the duck has traveled with Jake to the ballpark ever since....Faria is a Portuguese name…his paternal grandfather, Joe, came to the U.S. in 1959…the family returned to Portugal in 2005 to visit Joe's childhood home…his maternal grandparents immigrated from Cuba in the 1960s.... While on the disabled list last August, Jake and Jessica attended each of the three games between the Rangers and Astros, which were relocated to Tropicana Field due to Hurricane Harvey…Jake signed for fans in exchange for donations to hurricane relief... In January, Jake attended the Daniel Robertson Family Foundation's Mini Fan Fest in Upland, Calif. …while at the event, he saw a young fan wearing a Rays shirt with his name and number…it was the first time he had seen someone in his apparel outside the ballpark.... Jake grew up five minutes from Angel Stadium, and his family held season tickets for several years…in high school, he modeled his delivery after Jered Weaver.

2017

Reached the majors in June and yielded more than 3 runs in only 2 of his 14 starts…named the club's Outstanding Rookie by the Tampa Bay Chapter of the BBWAA…led AL rookies (min. 75 IP) with a 3.43 ERA (86.2-IP, 33-ER), .225 opp avg., .387 opp SLG, 8.72 SO/9 IP and 1.18 WHIP… ranked 4th among AL rookies with 84 SO, and ranked 2nd to NYY Jordan Montgomery (91) after his June 7 recall…achieved all this despite spending 25 games on the disabled list with a left abdominal strain (Aug 17-Sep 14).... Among Rays rookies with at least 75 IP, ranked 3rd in ERA behind Jeremy Hellickson (2.95) in 2011 and Chris Archer (3.22) in 2013…ranked 2nd in opp avg. behind Hellickson (.210) in 2011... From the date of his call up (June 7) until his injury (Aug 16), he ranked 9th among AL pitchers with a 3.32 ERA.... Held lefty hitters to a .173 avg. (17-for-98) with only 3 XBH (1-2B, 2-HR), but yielded 21 BB against 24 SO…opposing righties hit .248 (54-for218) with 22 XBH (12-2B, 1-3B, 9-HR), but drew only 10 BB to 60 SO.... Made his major league debut on June 7 vs. CWS, exactly six years after he was selected by the Rays in the 10th round of the 2011 June Draft… defeated Mike Pelfrey, 3-1, and totaled 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 5 SO…only allowed two runners to reach scoring position…became the second pitcher in club history to win his major league debut and pitch more than 6 IP, following Jeremy Hellickson in 2010…became the eighth pitcher in Rays history to win his major league debut as a starter, first since Alex Colomé on May 30, 2013 at MIA....  Became the second Ray to record the win in his first 3 career apps, all as a starter, following Jeremy Hellickson in 2010…became the fifth pitcher since Baseball Reference data is available (1913) to go 6 IP or more, allow 1 run or fewer and earn the win in his first 3 apps, joining STL Andy Rincon (1980), CIN Wayne Simpson (1970), STL Stu Miller (1952) and DET Alex Main (1914).... Improved to 4-0 in his sixth start, July 6 vs. BOS, becoming the second Ray to win his first 4 decisions, all as a starter, joining James Shields in 2006…extended his streak to 7 starts without a loss before losing his eighth start, July 19 at OAK…tied Alex Cobb (2011) for the longest streak by a Rays starter to begin a career without a loss.... Totaled 35 SO and 5 BB through his first 5 starts, becoming the second pitcher since data is available (1913) with at least 35 SO and 5 BB or fewer in his first 5 career starts, with no relief apps in between…he joined SEA Félix Hernández (38- SO, 5-BB) in 2005... Went 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA (45-IP, 10-ER) over his first 7 career starts, one of the best stretches ever by a Rays pitcher to begin his career…ranked 2nd in the AL in ERA over this span behind CLE Corey Kluber (1.44)…he was the first pitcher to begin his career with 7 consecutive quality starts since NYY Masahiro Tanaka (16) in 2014, and one of only nine pitchers since Baseball Reference data is available (1913) to begin his career in this fashion…also Tanaka, MTL Steve Rogers (16) in 1973, LAA Jered Weaver (9) in 2006, SD Joey Hamilton (9) in 2004, OAK A.J. Griffin (7) in 2012, NYY Scott Kamieniecki (7) in 1991, NYM Ron Darling (7) in 1983-84 and BOS Dave Ferriss (7) in 1945... Prior to his streak of 7 starts of at least 6 IP, the longest streak by a Rays pitcher to begin his career was 4 starts by Jeremy Hellickson in 2010... Went 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA (32.1-IP, 8-ER) in 5 starts in June, leading all major league rookies in ERA and strikeouts (35)…also ranked 3rd in the majors with a 7.00 SO/BB ratio, behind CLE Corey Kluber (9.14) and BOS Chris Sale (9.00).... Logged a career-high 9 SO on two occasions, June 18 at DET in a 9-1 victory and Aug 4 vs. MIL in a 2-0 loss... Started on his 24th birthday on July 30 at NYY and earned no decision in a 5-3 win…totaled 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 5 BB, 8 SO…became the first visiting rookie to start in the Bronx on his birthday since TB Jason Hammel on Sep 2, 2007, a win over Andy Pettitte on his 25th birthday... Made his first relief app on Sep 16 vs. BOS, his first game back from the disabled list, and did not allow a baserunner in 3 IP…it was the first perfect app of at least 3 IP by a Rays rookie since Travis Harper on June 27, 2002 vs. TOR (3 IP).... At the time of his June 7 recall, his 84 SO not only led the International League but were tied for 2nd in the minor leagues, behind LAD Wilmer Font (88)…was tied for the IL lead with 6 wins…struck out 34.7 pct. of batters faced with Durham (12.9 SO/9 IP).

2016

Ranked 8th among minor league pitchers and 2nd among Rays farmhands with 157 SO, trailing Jaime Schultz (163). Held opposing hitters to a .201 avg. (110-for-546) but yielded 12 HR, a career high and twice as many as 2015. Named to the Southern League midseason All-Star Game, his third straight season with mid-season honors…pitched a scoreless 4th inning and was promoted to Durham after the game. His first 2 Triple-A starts spanning 9 IP were scoreless, yielding only 2 H and 2 BB over that stretch…the second start was cut short due to a rain delay. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 8 prospect in the Rays organization following the season…earned the Southern League nod for Best Changeup in its Best Tools survey.

2015

Enjoyed a breakout season with Class-A Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery…despite pitching his last game for the Stone Crabs on June 12, was named their club's Most Valuable Player as well as a mid- and postseason Florida State League All-Star…Combined to go 17-4 with a 1.92 ERA (149.2-IP, 32-ER) and 159 SO…his 17 wins led all minor leaguers and tied Heath Rollins (2007, Class-A Columbus) for the Rays single-season minor league record…ranked 7th overall in strikeouts…also ranked among minor league leaders (min. 120 IP) in ERA (2nd to teammate Blake Snell, 1.41), opp avg. (.194, 4th) and WHIP (1.04, 6th)…Enters the 2016 season rated by Baseball America as the Rays No. 8 prospect (and No. 4 pitching prospect) after being omitted from their Top 30 Prospects list one year ago…they also rated him as having the Best Control in the organization…Named the Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, after going 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA (27-IP, 18-H, 5-ER, 5-BB, 25-SO) over two levels…His last 2 outings for Charlotte came opposite Marlins All-Star RH Jose Fernandez, who was rehabbing for Jupiter…outpitched him both times, and the Stone Crabs won both games…in his final start June 12 in Jupiter, threw 7 scoreless innings opposite Fernandez's 5 scoreless, and Charlotte won 1-0 in 10 innings, clinching the first-half FSL title…Selected to start the FSL All-Star Game in St. Lucie and pitched a perfect 1st inning for the South, who went on to win 6-0…On the Fourth of July, in his second start for Montgomery, tossed 7 innings of no-hit ball vs. Biloxi (Brewers)…the no-hitter was spoiled when reliever Jared Mortensen yielded a leadoff triple in the 8th, but Faria earned a 7-2 win and logged a career-high 14 SO…it was his first career double-digit strikeout game, but he reached 10 SO three times in his 13 starts with the Biscuits.
