ST. PETERSBURG -- The fans got into the action in the first inning of the Rays' 3-0 win over the Red Sox at Tropicana Field on Saturday night, interfering with a potential David Ortiz home run.

Ortiz thought he had cracked a home run off Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the first. But a Red Sox fan was called for fan interference, turning the hit into a ground-rule double.

"They say the guy reached over," Ortiz said. "The guy, he reached over, but the pressure of the ball pulled him down. That ball was going to be over the yellow line over there."

The fan, wearing a red Boston jersey, reached over the fence in right field and caught Big Papi's line drive in his glove, just in front of the yellow-painted boundary line. First-base umpire Vic Carapazza immediately signaled for interference, as Rays right fielder Kevin Kiermaier frantically pointed up toward the fence in reaction to the fan's catch.

"I think that the umpire down the line, he kind of panicked when he saw the right fielder [motioning for interference]," Ortiz said. "I guess that's what happened. But I watched the whole replay -- that was a home run."

Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to request that the umpires look the play over, and crew chief Bill Miller initiated a review of the potential home run. After a review of one minute, 58 seconds, the call on the field stood and Ortiz was awarded second base.

He was stranded there, as Hellickson struck out the following batter, Mike Napoli, to end the inning.
