Maddon came onto the field to briefly talk to first base umpire Mike DiMuro. He then appealed the call and the crew, headed by Hunter Wendelstedt, retreated to review the call. After a review of 56 seconds, the call on the field was overturned.
In the bottom half of the inning, Maddon again challenged a call on the field when Brian Dozier was ruled to have been hit by a pitch from Alex Cobb with one out in the inning. After 2 minutes, 51 seconds, the decision was made that the call on the field stands.
The Rays have had 33 challenges this season. Of them, 12 have been overturned, 11 have stood and 10 have been confirmed.
