Price named to AL pitching staff for All-Star Game

DETROIT -- David Price is going to the All-Star Game.

The Rays left-hander, who was a manager's selection, entered Sunday night's start against the Tigers at 7-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 18 starts.

"It's always extra special to be selected," Price said.

Price's control has been just short of incredible this season. In 131 innings prior to Sunday, he'd struck out 153 and walked just 17. But he'd also surrendered 17 home runs.

"It hasn't been a typical year," Price said. "I'm leading the league in a couple of categories, but one I'm not particularly proud of. I've never been a guy to give up a bunch of home runs. I've got to do a better job of keeping it in the park and staying away from giving up those crooked numbers. If I could take away four or five innings from this season, I feel like I would be close to putting up some pretty special numbers."

Price tied former Ray Carl Crawford for the most All-Star selections in club history with his fourth. Rays manager Joe Maddon was pleased that Price made the team.

"He definitely deserves it," Maddon said. "We talked about that, I thought him and Jake [McGee] were the two deserving candidates from this team. It just validates the wonderful year he's having right now. And don't be deceived by a couple bad innings or a couple homers -- this guy's been kind of lights-out the whole first half. ... It's well-deserved, earned, and we're really happy for him."

ASG W-L: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, three appearances (one start)
How he made 2014 AL team: Manager's selection
Why he's an All-Star: According to Price, he is pitching at a higher level than at any other time in his career. Heady stuff considering he won an AL Cy Young Award in 2012.
DYK?: Price is an avid Twitter user with well over 216,000 followers.
Quotable: "The coolest part is that it will be Derek Jeter's last All-Star Game and that it is being played at my favorite field," Price said. "I love Target Field. And the third thing is that the Rays open the second half there. I've always been envious of the guys who have been in that position, where their teams are playing in the All-Star city [to start the second half of the season]. It will be nice just to hang out there for a couple of days."
