Belnome, who was batting .225 with the Bulls, hit between James Loney and Kevin Kiermaier in what manager Joe Maddon called "a Belnome sandwich." He was the designated hitter Thursday.
Maddon noted that, facing Max Scherzer, the team wanted to add another left-handed bat to the mix.
"When it comes to stuff like that, I really rely on the front office and our Minor League people and scouts," Maddon said before the game. "He's a guy who, since we've acquired him, there's been a lot of really good talk about him. I know at Spring Training he didn't show that necessarily as much as I had heard. Tough beginning, but I've heard it's been getting better."
In the corresponding roster move, the Rays optioned the contract of lefty Jeff Beliveau to Durham. He did not enter a game in his third stint with the big league club this season. Earlier in the year, Beliveau appeared in two games and pitched a scoreless inning in each.
