NEW YORK -- The Rays claimed right-hander Cory Burns off waivers from Texas on Monday afternoon.

To make room for Burns on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated for assignment right-hander Angel Sanchez.

Burns, 26, has made 27 relief appearances over the past two years with the Padres (2012) and Rangers ('13). He's spent the 2014 season at Triple-A Round Rock, where he was 2-2 with a 7.44 ERA in 20 games (one start).

Burns will be optioned to Double-A Montgomery.
