BALTIMORE -- Even with his team leading by six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Joe Maddon wasn't going to take any chances with a close play at first. The Rays manager decided to challenge an infield single by O's shortstop J.J. Hardy.
Hardy hit a soft grounder to Evan Longoria at third base and arrived at first after the third baseman's throw arrived in James Loney's glove. Hardy was ruled safe by first-base umpire Tony Randazzo, but after a 53-second review, the call was overturned.
Maddon is now 10-for-28 on challenges this year.
