KANSAS CITY -- Joe Maddon's string of successful video challenges ended in Tampa Bay's 4-2 loss to Kansas City on Monday night.
After twice challenging calls to have rulings overturned in the Rays' favor, the manager's streak ended in the eighth inning on a bang-bang play at first base.
Wil Myers grounded to second baseman Danny Valencia, whose throw to first arrived in Eric Hosmer's glove just as Myers reached the bag. First-base umpire Quinn Wolcott called Myers out for the final out of the inning.
After the Royals returned to the dugout, Maddon challenged the call.
"I challenged it," Maddon said. "We had a challenge in our pocket. Why not?"
A review of the replay took place, and the umpires ruled that the play would stand.
"I knew it was close," Myers said. "Obviously, I would say I was safe, because I was the runner. It was a close play, but they got it right."
The review took one minute and five seconds.
