ST. PETERSBURG -- Joe Maddon made his second challenge of the season Saturday night and for the second time in as many nights, the Rays manager came out in the plus column when a call that went against the Rays was overturned.

Robinson Chirinos grounded to shortstop Yunel Escobar to start the Rangers' second and was ruled safe on a bang-bang play at first.

As has been Maddon's custom during this first week of instant replay, he strolled to first-base umpire Mike DiMuro while in the bowels of Tropicana Field, video coordinator Chris Fernandez viewed the call from several angles.

Fernandez relayed his opinion about the call to bench coach Davey Martinez, who then gave Maddon the signal to challenge.

After one minute and 35 seconds passed, the umpires made the ruling that turned an infield single into the first out of the inning.

Friday night, Maddon made a challenge with two outs in the top of the seventh after Wil Myers dove to catch a fly ball hit by J.P. Arencibia. Initially the play was ruled a single, but the replay confirmed that Myers made the catch for the third out of the inning.

"I've been a proponent of replay," Maddon said. "I think it's good. The umpires have done a great job with it. It's working. It seems to be working well.

"There is a situation where I might go out and argue. It would probably take me longer to argue that play than to come to a correct conclusion, so I think it's working well to this point."
