ST. PETERSBURG -- Switch-hitting veteran Wilson Betemit has agreed to a Minor League deal with the Rays, according to CBSSports.com.

The club has not confirmed the deal.

Betemit, 32, spent the past two seasons with the Orioles, playing first base, designated hitter, left field and third base, while hitting .254 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 108 games.

Betemit was limited to just six games in the Majors last year due to a tear of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, sustained while he was running the bases during a March Grapefruit League game. Betemit returned to action in late August, assuming a limited role and finishing the season without a hit in 10 plate appearances.

In 11 Major League seasons with the Braves, Royals, Dodgers, Yankees, Tigers, White Sox and Orioles, Betemit has a .267 batting average, with 75 home runs, 283 RBIs, a .442 slugging percentage and a .774 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Because the Rays' roster has few openings right now, the Betemit pickup was likely made to provide depth.
