ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays announced Tuesday that they have claimed left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa off unconditional release waivers from the A's.

To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Jerry Sands was designated for assignment.

Figueroa pitched in 24 games for Oakland over the past two seasons, making five appearances in 2013.

The 28-year-old spent most of the past two years with Triple-A Sacramento, going 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 46 appearances last year after posting a 2.62 ERA in 32 games in 2012.
