Scioscia lauds Rays' Percival

|
ANAHEIM -- Troy Percival was supposed to pay a visit to the Rays' clubhouse prior to Monday night's game against the Angels, but he had personal business that delayed him.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said the injured Tampa Bay closer would be at the game Tuesday, adding, "I'm pretty sure."

Percival went 0-1 with a 6.34 ERA with six saves in 14 appearances for the Rays this season before going on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. Maddon silenced any talk about the veteran reliever returning this season.

"He's down for the year right now," Maddon said. "I don't know what he might decide after the conclusion of this year. But we've been working. He's been enjoying life in Riverside, [Calif.], with his family. I don't want to speak for him [on] exactly what he's thinking about next year. But for this year, it's pretty much a moot point."

Angels manager Mike Scioscia had some nice things to say about Percival, who pitched 10 seasons for the Halos.

"Percy for so long while here, you had a guy in the back of the bullpen that could shorten the game and was available every night," Scioscia said. "He'd pitch if his arm was falling off, and get it done."

Scioscia called Percival's 2008 season with the Rays "remarkable."

"But time sometimes catches up with you, and if he's done, I don't think there's any regrets that Percy could have about what he gave to this game and how hard he went," Scioscia said. "And he got to go the World Series twice and won it once, and you can't ask for more than that."

Scioscia also lauded Percival for the way he mentored young players.

"He mentored a lot of guys -- Frankie Rodriguez, Scot Shields, a lot of guys that have been prominent in our 'pen. He was a mentor to them and was a great influence."
