Rays-Red Sox a wash; game to be made up on Monday

BOSTON -- Thursday night's Rays-Red Sox game was postponed due to rain and will be made up Monday night at Fenway Park at 6:10 ET.

"The umpires did the right thing," manager Joe Maddon said. "It was all about playing nine innings. It should never be about starting the game and hoping to get in five. That should never be the ways it's viewed. And I really appreciate that they did it that way, and I commend them on it."

Both teams had scheduled off-days on Monday. The Rays will be arriving from New York following a weekend series against the Yankees, and the Red Sox will be returning from a weekend series in Baltimore.

Jeremy Hellickson, Chris Archer and Matt Moore will pitch the Yankees series, with Monday's starter to be announced.

"We can do different things on Monday. We haven't decided on that," Maddon said.

Roberto Hernandez would be next in the rotation, but there is a chance the Rays will give the Red Sox a double dose of David Price, who would be pitching on regular rest after his complete game in Boston on Wednesday night.

Hellickson, who was to have started on Thursday, is pleased he did not have to fight rain delays throughout the night.

"Nice not to burn a start. [In Cleveland earlier this season, Moore threw] an inning and he was all messed up for a few starts, so it was nice to find out early," Hellickson said.
