McLaren rejoins Rays as special scout

ST. PETERSBURG -- Former Mariners manager and Rays coach John McLaren has been been hired by Tampa Bay as a special assignments scout.

McLaren served as the Rays' bench coach during Lou Piniella's tenure as manager of the team from 2003-05.

McLaren, who managed the Mariners from July 1, 2007-June 19, 2008, entered Major League Baseball as the third-base coach of the Blue Jays in 1986 after eight years as a manager in Toronto's farm system. He coached for the Blue Jays through 1990 then was the bullpen coach for the Red Sox ('91) before joining Piniella's coaching staff with the Reds ('92). He followed Piniella to Seattle and Tampa Bay (1993-2005).

McLaren spent almost 22 years as a coach in the Major Leagues until he was elevated to the Mariners' managerial post. McLaren also served as the third-base coach for Team USA during the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
