Rays set roster, go with 11 pitchers

Rays set ALCS roster

|
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays announced their roster for the American League Championship Series and, as expected, they went with 11 pitchers and 14 position players, which translated to right-hander Edwin Jackson being added to the roster and outfielder Eric Hinske being removed.

Having enough arms in the event of a pitching catastrophe in a seven-game series became the overriding reason for going with 11 hurlers.

"The thing that's a concern is that you have that one bad game and you have to use people you don't want to use in that one bad game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "The days off help you, but if the bad game happens on the first day and then there's another game before a day off, that could still [mess] you up in regard to winning the next day. So I think it's important that you're covered -- especially pitching-wise -- in a seven-game series."

The composition of the Rays' roster will be as follows:

Pitchers (11): Grant Balfour, Chad Bradford, Matt Garza, J.P. Howell, Jackson, Scott Kazmir, Trever Miller, David Price, James Shields, Andy Sonnanstine and Dan Wheeler

Catchers (2): Dioner Navarro and Michel Hernandez

Infielders (6): Willy Aybar, Jason Bartlett, Akinori Iwamura, Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Ben Zobrist

Outfielders (5): Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, Gabe Gross, Fernando Perez and B.J. Upton

DH (1): Cliff Floyd

Maddon said the roster decisions for the ALCS were every bit as difficult as those he made for the ALDS.

"They're all hard," Maddon said. "When you have guys that have played all year with the group and then you have to pick and choose at this time of the year to say somebody's on and somebody's off, that's not fun, because, again, everybody is responsible for us being at this particular juncture. There's nobody that has not contributed. So when you do this, it's difficult. You still have to choose on what you think is the right thing to do."
