Earlier, Longoria was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partial tear of his left hamstring.
To make room for Rhymes on the 40-man roster, right-hander Kyle Farnsworth was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Rhymes, who turned 29 on April 1, has played in 22 games for Durham this season, including 16 starts at second base and six starts at third base. A left-handed hitter, Rhymes batted .231 overall for Durham and .295 (18-for-61) against right-handed pitchers. He signed with the Rays on Jan. 19 and was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.
Rhymes has hit .283 over parts of two seasons in the Major Leagues with the Tigers. In 2011, he was the Tigers' Opening Day second baseman and had three stints in the Majors, spending the remainder of the season with Triple-A Toledo.
Farnsworth, 36, opened the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. Following his transfer to the 60-day disabled list, the first day he is eligible to be activated is now June 5. In 2011, he led the Rays with a career-high 25 saves, going 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 63 appearances.
