Baldelli plays in extended spring game

|
ST. PETERSBURG -- Rocco Baldelli played in an extended spring training game on Thursday, which is the first he has played in any sort of game since early in Spring Training.

Baldelli, who has been showing up at Tropicana Field for home games, went 1-for-5 as the team's designated hitter.

Baldelli, 26, is on the 60-day disabled list with a mitochondrial disorder, an abnormality that has kept him in a constant state of fatigue. The Rays have not set a timetable for Baldelli's return, but earlier in the week he expressed hope for a return this season in some capacity.

Baldelli has not played in a Major League game since last May. He has a .282 career average in four Major League seasons with 48 home runs and 221 RBIs; he hit .204 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 35 games in 2007.
