Rays end road trip with Fenway matinee

Rays wrap up road trip with Fenway matinee

The Devil Rays will play the final game of their three-game series against the Red Sox -- and the finale of their three-stop road trip -- on Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Starter Andy Sonnanstine hopes to avoid losing his ninth consecutive decision. The rookie right-hander is drawing some concerns from Rays brass due to a lack of effectiveness with his slider and changeup. Sonnanstine enjoyed great success at the Minor League level with both pitches, but manager Joe Maddon believes that Sonnanstine just needs to pitch more with his fastball.

Sonnanstine was unable to hold a 3-2 lead on Friday in Texas, giving up five runs over 4 1/3 innings. He will be facing the Red Sox for the first time in his career.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will start for the Red Sox. After holding the Orioles to one run on four hits in his last outing, the right-hander came away with a no-decision because of late-inning outbursts by both offenses. Matsuzaka is 1-1 with a 1.26 ERA in two starts against Tampa Bay this season.

After finishing with the Red Sox, the Rays will enjoy an off-day before returning to Tropicana Field to begin a homestand against the Indians, Red Sox and A's.
