RAYS 12, PIRATES 4
at Bradenton, Fla.
Sunday, March 25
Rays at the plate: Tampa Bay scored two runs each in the first, fourth and fifth innings, and added one each in the second and sixth to jump out to a big lead. Delmon Young collected his eighth and ninth RBIs of the spring with singles in the first and sixth innings. Catcher Shawn Riggans singled in Jonny Gomes to push the lead to 3-0 in the second. Gomes had a two-run homer over the wall in left for his team-high-tying 10th RBI.
Pirates at the plate: The team scraped together just three hits through the first five innings, singles by Jack Wilson, pinch-hitter Adam Boeve and Adam LaRoche. Humberto Cota (throwing) and Jose Castillo (fielding) each had an error, but Castillo redeemed himself in the sixth with a double to center that scored two to break up the shutout.
Rays on the mound: Jae Seo scattered five hits over seven innings and kept the Pirates off the board until the sixth. He allowed just two runs while striking out five.
Pirates on the mound: Tom Gorzelanny continued to struggle early on in his outings, allowing seven runs (five earned) and walking three in five innings. He fanned four, but three of the seven hits he allowed went for extra bases. Closer Salomon Torres retired just one of the six batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Grapefruit League records: Pirates 10-15-1; Rays 8-16-1.
