Rays have tough night vs. Yankees

Devil Rays at the plate: The Devil Rays were limited to just two hits through the first seven innings, singles by Carl Crawford and Jonny Gomes.

Yankees at the plate: Derek Jeter's two-run single highlighted a four-run New York second inning. Johnny Damon picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Robinson Cano brought home a run with a fielder's choice. Jorge Posada slugged his second home run of the spring in the sixth inning.

Devil Rays on the mound: Tim Corcoran, making a bid to open the season in Tampa Bay's rotation, had a rough go against the Yankees in his first start of the spring. The 28-year-old allowed three hits and four runs in two innings, walking three and hitting a batter.

Yankees on the mound: Filling in for Carl Pavano, who was scratched for personal reasons, Jeff Karstens fired three shutout innings, striking out four. The 24-year-old Karstens allowed two hits and has now compiled five scoreless innings this spring. Left-handed prospect Chase Wright struck out all three batters he faced in the fourth.

Grapefruit League records: Devil Rays 1-7; Yankees 7-1-1.

Up next: The Yankees travel to Bradenton, Fla., on Saturday to face the Pirates in a 1:05 p.m. ET start. Left-hander Kei Igawa is scheduled to pitch for New York, and left-hander Paul Maholm is slated for Pittsburgh.

The Devil Rays have a pair of split-squad games scheduled for Saturday. Half of the club will see the Phillies in a 1:05 p.m. start at home in St. Petersburg, with right-hander Jae Seo opposing right-hander Freddy Garcia.

The other Devil Rays squad will play the Twins in Fort Myers, Fla., in a 1:05 p.m. start, with right-hander Brian Stokes matching up against right-hander Ramon Ortiz.
