Rays sign Gonzalez to Minor League deal

|
DUNEDIN, Fla -- The Rays signed veteran right-hander Edgar Gonzalez to a Minor League contract on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old did not receive an invitation to Spring Training, but he is expected to compete for a spot in the rotation with Triple-A Durham.

Gonzalez has not pitched in the Major Leagues since 2009, when he went 0-4 with a 5.51 ERA in 26 outings, including six starts, with Oakland. The native of Mexico, who also pitched in Arizona, has tallied a 14-25 record with a 5.88 ERA and 207 strikeouts over 323 innings during his seven-year career.

Last season, Gonzalez pitched for Triple-A Albuquerque in the Los Angeles Dodgers' Minor League system. He posted a 1-1 record with a 4.81 ERA in four starts.
