Crawford out of Friday's starting lineup

TORONTO -- Entering the 15th game of a 20-games-in-20-days stretch, Rays manager Joe Maddon opted to leave All-Star outfielder Carl Crawford out of the starting lineup in Friday night's tilt against the Blue Jays.

Crawford, who is eligible to pinch-hit, had played in 104 of the club's 108 games this season.

"I just think that he needs a day," Maddon said. "He's been part of this long stretch, and you know how he plays in the outfield and how much he relies on his legs. Coming onto this particular surface, I thought it would be a good day to [leave him out]."

Crawford is expected to be back in the lineup against left-hander Brad Mills on Saturday.
