To make room for Bartlett on the 25-man roster, outfielder Justin Ruggiano was optioned to Triple-A Durham.
Bartlett, who has been nursing a right hamstring strain, played for Durham on Monday night against Gwinnett. He led off and played seven innings at shortstop, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in his first rehab appearance. He was supposed to be used as the designated hitter on Tuesday, but Durham's game got rained out.
Nevertheless, Rays manager Joe Maddon said that Bartlett is fine and that he will start at shortstop Wednesday night against the Braves.
